Bishop Raica Reassigned to Alabama

The Vatican has announced that Bishop Raica, currently the Bishop of the Diocese of Gaylord, is being reassigned to the Diocese of Birmingham, AL.  This is expected to occur this coming June.

Bishop Raica’s leadership in Gaylord has been rocked by scandals involving numerous allegations of sexual misconduct by his former Vicar General, the disgraced Fr. Dennis Stilwell.  Also, former priest James Holtz was allowed to minister altar boys for years after he was removed from active ministry due to an admission of sexual abuse.

Bishop Raica suspended Fr. Matthew Cowan after Fr. Cowan made public his allegations of sexual abuse by Fr. Stilwell.  This has caused significant controversy and was a significant inspiration for the founding of Gaylord Diocesan Watch.  We will continue to monitor this situation closely.  Please keep Bishop Raica, Fr. Cowan, and all of our diocesan clergy in your prayers.  We pray for a good Shepherd to take the place of Bishop Raica.
