The recently formed “Vocations Team” of the Diocese of Gaylord has been formally named: Fathers Bearss, Cowan, Geyman, Jarvis, Rexroat, Roman, and Wigton. They are listed in the latest issue of Faith on the 45th Parallel (coined by some as Fluff on the 45th Parallel), a magazine published by the Diocese of Gaylord.
Over 80% of the vocations to the Diocese of Gaylord, however, have been coming from one parish, Holy Rosary Church in Cedar. But the pastor of the parish (Fr. Donald Libby), credited by many to be the inspiration for these vocations, is glaringly absent from the roster of priests on the Team. Also conspicuously absent is Bishop Jeffrey Walsh.
Shouldn’t the parish that is bringing the overwhelming majority of vocations to the Diocese of Gaylord have prominent representation in this vocations group? Also, if this were really front and center as a need for the Diocese, wouldn’t it be a good idea to have the Bishop of the Diocese leading the charge? Is this really something that should be delegated? Furthermore, the assignment of Fr. Geyman to the committee has raised some eyebrows among faithful Catholics, as he was recently disciplined for a question of inappropriate behavior when interacting with a parishioner. Does this leave a good impression for the Team?
On the other hand, some of the committee are well respected clergy in the Diocese and will hopefully offer, through the work of the Holy Spirit, an opportunity to inspire holy young men to step up to the plate for a vocation to the priesthood. Gaylord Diocesan Watch will be watching for some hopeful fruit of this endeavor.
